Here’s a pressing that deserves more attention from collectors who appreciate the intersection of classical excellence and American recording history. Robert Shaw’s 1958 “Joy To The World” on RCA Camden represents the chorale master at his most accessible, yet without any compromise to his legendary standards. Shaw, who would go on to win 14 Grammy Awards and transform American choral music, was already establishing his reputation as the definitive interpreter of both sacred and secular vocal works. This album captures the Robert Shaw Chorale during their golden period with RCA, before Shaw’s later tenure with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra that would cement his classical legacy.
