Here’s a fascinating piece of late-70s easy listening that deserves more recognition among collectors. Frank Mills’ “Sunday Morning Suite” represents the Canadian pianist at his most ambitious, moving beyond his commercial hit “Music Box Dancer” into more sophisticated jazz-inflected territory. This 1979 release showcases Mills’ classical training and his ability to craft melodic, accessible instrumentals that bridge the gap between smooth jazz and what would later be called new age music. The album’s title track is a multi-movement piece that demonstrates his compositional skills beyond the simple, catchy melodies that made him famous.
