Here’s a fascinating piece of musical history that captures a unique moment in early 80s cross-cultural jazz fusion. Der Schrge Otto, the German pianist known for his theatrical “crazy” persona and ragtime-influenced style, ventured to London in 1981 to record this ambitious album that bridges European cabaret sensibilities with British pop production. The result is something quite special a collection that showcases Otto’s virtuosic piano work against lush orchestral arrangements, all filtered through that distinctly early 80s studio sheen that Polydor was perfecting at the time.
