When Charlie Parker went into the studio for the first time in 1949 with a string orchestra plus jazz trio, critics feared an “artistic sell-out” of the alto saxophonist. They were wrong: the album not only proved to be a commercial success, but also met the highest musical standards. Its charm lay precisely in the contrast between the arranged passages for the string orchestra and the ingenious improvisational lines of the saxophone soloist.
