The Chicago-born trombonist Bennie Green made his Blue Note debut with his delightful 1958 album Back On The Scene featuring a stellar quintet with saxophonist Charlie Rouse, pianist Joe Knight, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Louis Hayes. From buoyant swing to Latin grooves to tender ballads the band delivers a thoroughly enjoyable program that presents standards (I Love You Just Friends Youre Mine You) as well as Greens original Bennie Plays The Blues and a pair of compositions by the wonderful jazz composer and fellow trombonist Melba Liston (Melbas Mood Green Street).
