Here’s a fascinating piece of Canadian electronic music history that rarely surfaces in collections. John Pfeiffer’s “Electronomusic 9 Images” represents one of the earliest forays into synthesized composition released by a major label in Canada, predating much of the electronic experimentation that would follow in the 1970s. Pfeiffer, who was primarily known as RCA’s chief recording engineer and had worked with legends like Arthur Rubinstein and Van Cliburn, took a bold creative leap here, crafting nine abstract electronic pieces that push the boundaries of what was considered music in 1968. The album stands as a remarkable document of early Moog synthesizer work, with Pfeiffer exploring everything from haunting ambient textures to rhythmic electronic pulses that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Kraftwerk record.
