Los Angeles-via-Oakland musician Chris Adams who makes music under themoniker PENDANT releases his Saddle Creek debutHarp, on April 8th. A lush,surprising newbody of work from the producer and songwriter,Harpconnects 90s house and rave music with hip-hop, shoegaze, and pop, andwhich serves as a culmination of years ofpainful emotional work for Adamsbrought on by the death of his Father over 10 years prior. ThoughHarpisAdams sophomore album as PENDANT, it feels like a startingpoint. Therelease of his 2019 debutThrough a Coilwas marred by the messy, publicdissolution of the record label it was released on the day it was to be released.A year laterhe was burnt out. Attempting to tour the album had been hard onhis voice, and the structures of rock music, which had dictated his entire life asa musician, were beginning tofeel claustrophobic.

PENDANTs salvation came, ironically, in the form of the pandemic. Adamswas ready to make new music but was both mentally and physicallymarooned, unable to reach thetools he would ordinarily use to make musicor the headspace he would ordinarily inhabit. Without a guitar, the crutch thathad supported much of his music-making in the past,he was forced to sketchoutHarps world in a more impressionistic, free-associative way. Long a fan ofdance and electronic music, he was suddenly without any good reasonto notventure into that beat-heavy, synth-drenched world. The resultingHarprecalls the precise but emotionally rich landscapes of Arca or Oneohtrix PointNever, rendered inthe watercolors of My Bloody Valentine.
